All You Need To Know About Caring For Oily Skin

Greasy face, open pores, acne—oily skin comes with different kinds of dermatological issues. Everyone has sebaceous glands under their skin that release an oil called sebum. Sebum is necessary to keep the skin moist and hydrated. However, these glands can be hyperactive in some people, resulting in the release of excessive oil on the skin. Let us understand more about the causes and ways to deal with oily skin.

What causes oily skin?

The most common causes of oily skin include:

  • Family history: People who have a parent with oily skin are more likely to have oily skin themselves. Studies have shown that overactive sebaceous glands can be passed on genetically.
  • Environment: Hot and humid climates can result in excessive production of sebum.
  • Hormonal medications: Some medicines such as oral contraceptives and hormone-replacement-therapy medications can lead to the production of extra sebum, resulting in oily skin.
  • Skin damage: Using harsh skincare products, washing the face too frequently, or exfoliating vigorously can trigger the production of extra sebum.

How to manage oily skin?

Here are some measures that can help in managing oily skin.

  • Keep your hands off your face: Touching your face too often can expose it to dirt and microorganisms that could trigger acne.
  • Keep skin clean: Wash your face twice a day (morning and evening) to prevent the accumulation of excess sebum. You should also wash your face immediately after exercising. Do not scrub as it irritates the skin.
  • Use skin-friendly products: Avoid using skin care products that contain alcohol or oil as they can irritate the skin and trigger the release of excess sebum. Use gentle face washes with no fragrance to cleanse the face.
  • Read the label carefully: Choose skincare products that are labelled ‘non-comedogenic’ and ‘oil free’ as they do not cause clogging of pores and acne. Do not use products containing coconut oil, cocoa butter, silicone, or petroleum jelly.
  • Keep skin hydrated: Drink at least 2 litres of water to stay hydrated. Do not forget to use a non-comedogenic moisturizer to keep the skin supple.
  • Protect skin from sun exposure: Use an oil and fragrance-free sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher to protect the skin from harmful ultraviolet rays and premature ageing.
  • Remove makeup before sleeping: Do not sleep with makeup on. Use a water-based makeup remover to clean the face and wash thoroughly afterwards.
  • Use home remedies cautiously: While some people believe that using turmeric, coffee, toothpaste, and aspirin on the face can help reduce breakouts, none of them have been scientifically proven to reduce acne.
  • Eat a healthy diet: Limit the consumption of processed and baked foods as they are high in carbohydrates, and sugar can cause acne. Consume foods rich in vitamin C, fibre, nuts, and seeds as they provide healthy fats to the body and also nourish the skin.
  • Visit a dermatologist: Consult a dermatologist to get treatment for stubborn acne and other dermatological issues.
